Keeping your child out of candy stores can be difficult, simply because kids love candy! Although candy is delicious and can provide a tasty treat from time to time, it is certainly not something that they should be eating each and every day. You may wonder why it is so important to keep your kid away from candy stores, but there are actually a few key reasons.
First and foremost, candy is bad for your child’s teeth. Hard and chewy pieces of candy, such as Jolly Ranchers and Tootsie Rolls, stay in your child’s mouth longer and stick to their teeth. The sugar may coat them and lead to cavities.
It is also important to keep your child out of candy stores because of all the calories in candy. A box of Nerds has 60 calories and just a small, snack-size Snickers candy bar is 80 calories. Think about all of the calories that your child will be taking in each time they make a purchase from the store. Just a couple of dollars can buy them many thousands of calories worth of chocolate and candy, and they're not yet savvy enough to know that eating their candy all in one go will eventually make them fat. Unfortunately, high intakes of sugar and calories can lead to obesity and diabetes in children.
If your child has a food allergy, you need to be doubly careful of letting them go to the candy store unsupervised. He or she probably isn’t going to bother to read the label before eating the candy. If your child has a food allergy and eats a candy bar at the store, they run the risk of having an allergic reaction, which can be life threatening in some cases. Always supervise your children, and limit the amount of cash they have available to spent on candy.
