Why BPA Plastic is Dangerous to Children

List: Posted: 08/09/11

BPA is a chemical that is used to produce a number of plastic substances, like baby bottles and containers.  Its use is very common, but reports show that the chemical is extremely toxic at certain doses.  The government is requiring a slow phasing out of all manufactured products that contain BPA, but they have so far not banned or recalled any products that contain the chemical.

The best thing you can do is to educate yourself about what products contain BPA, then do your best to avoid using them around your children.  BPA is present in plastic food containers labled on the bottom or top with the letters "PC" recycling label #7. Polycarbonate plastics are used for sippy cups, baby bottles, food storage, and water bottles.

Bisphenol A often disrupts the hormones in the body and causes adverse effects on health and well-being.  Many studies have been conducted on BPA, and some have found that being exposed to BPA over a number of years can lead to neurological problems in children and infants.  Because of this, it's very important to ensure that your child's bottles are free of the chemical.  Some studies have also concluded that there is a significant correlation between early exposure to BPA plastic and obesity or cancer.

BPA has also been shown to have a significant impact on the reproductive organs in the system, with some studies showing long-term effects on the genital tract and breast tissues.  BPA can also negatively affect growth and development of natural animal life and aquatic systems.

Since the negative effects of BPA are so prevalent, it is important to make sure that you avoid plastic as much as possible, and ensure that any plastic you do use is healthy to both your body and to the environment.
