Few things can put stress and strain on a relationship like cheating can. We have all heard the phrase that “once a cheater, always a cheater” from friends and relationship councilors alike. But is this always the case? Is it really impossible to trust someone with a history of cheating?
While many friends will tell you that you need to be wary of anyone who has cheated in the past, it is important to realize one crucial fact. If you do not trust your partner, your relationship cannot succeed. Cheating is certainly a big deal, but if you find out that it has been an issue with your partner, it is something you should discuss from the beginning. If you don’t feel that you can trust your partner, it is only fair to both of you to consider calling off the relationship.
While not all people with a history of cheating find redemption and stop the behavior, the fact is that many people do. It is possible to make an innocent mistake, and many cheaters do learn from their mistake after a single episode.
Should you trust someone who has never had a relationship that didn’t involve cheating? Probably not. But you also can’t doubt everyone who has ever made a mistake. If there has only ever been one incident of cheating that happened a long time ago, and the person has had many successful relationships since then, you should consider the fact that they may have learned their lesson.
Ultimately, it comes down to you deciding whether or not your partner can be trusted. Understand that a lack of trust can make a relationship impossible. If you believe your partner and believe in what they feel for you, it will be necessary to reconcile your doubts. Not everyone can be trusted, but past cheating behavior is not always an indicator of how you will be treated in the future.
