When children are just beginning to discover the world, the last thing they want to do is go to bed. After all, Mommy and Daddy get to stay up late and watch television, or have friends over and make secret plans behind closed doors. In a child's mind, all the best stuff happens after they've fallen asleep.
Kids need their sleep though. Doctors agree that if your little ones are going to be healthy and alert the next day, whether they are going to school or playing, they need to get to bed on time. The following tips should help you get your kids tucked into bed each night without having to fight a battle of wits each night when both you and your child are tired and cranky.
Firstly, you will want to set and exact time for your child to go to bed each night, and you will want to instill this from the moment they are sleeping through the night. A routine will let your child know that bedtime is coming, and will both psychologically and physically program them to get sleepy at a certain time.
Another great tip is to create and uphold a fixed bedtime routine. That way, after they bathe and brush their teeth, they'll know it's time to head off to bed.
The best time-tested device to help kids settle down at night is a bedtime story. Set aside fifteen minutes to half an hour to read to your kids each night. Choose a long story for bedtime, one that will take at least several nights to finish. That way, the child will be excited when it comes time for bed.
Another fun idea is to have your little one's start a dream journal. Even if they are too young to write in it they can report their dreams to you, and you can write in the journal for them. Before long, they will be happy to head off to bed each night.
