Keeping your child safe and healthy is a big concern to any parent, but it becomes even more challenging when your child goes to daycare. While keeping your child safe from harm is any parent's goal, it is nearly impossible to protect them from every germ or infection. Daycare often puts children at increased risk of sickness because they are around so many other children who may be carrying bacteria and germs that can infect your child.
There are ways that you can actively protect your child's health, even at daycare, but every child will experience an illness at some point, so it is good to be prepared and stay calm when it does happen.
The Hygiene Hypothesis
Studies have been conducted that indicate that children that are exposed to other children early on in life develop strong immunities against sickness and disease. The theory states that exposure to germs and bacteria is not necessarily bad for your child because even if they get sick, their body learns to fight off the sickness at a young age.
This is only one theory, but it is still a comforting thought that your child may actually be better off in the long run because they have been exposed to people and other children at day care.
Keep Little Hands Clean
Everyone says it, but washing hands well and often is still the best way to protect your child (and yourself) from illness. Wash your hands as frequently as you can, and make sure that your child learns to get in the habit of washing his or her hands after using the bathroom or playing outside. This will help them develop a habit, and this is one habit that will benefit them for years to come. Many germs are spread by touch, and keeping your hands clean is the #1 best way to prevent your child from catching a cold or getting sick.
If you can't wash your hands as often as you would like, then hand sanitizer is a great substitute, and it can serve the same general purpose as washing your hands.
Keep Your Day Care Informed of Any Health Issues
If your child is prone to sickness or has a weakened immune system, it is best to let your daycare provider know so that they can take the proper precautions. Accidents are common in day care if the center is overcrowded or staff are off sick, but it is very important to make sure that your provider supervises your child at all times so that they are not left unattended to get into trouble. If you are worried about your child's safety due to staff vacancies, overcrowding or inattentiveness, address your concerns immediately with your provider.
Interview Your Day Care Provider Thoroughly
A licensed daycare provider will not only give you peace of mind but will also ensure that your child is properly cared for when you are away. Inspections of the day care facility are a must. You can interview any daycare providers that you consider and make sure to ask all of the questions that you have up front before you choose a day care for your child.
