How to Deal With Loneliness - 7 Tips to Beat the Blues

List: Posted: 10/18/11

The problem with loneliness is that it strikes everyone regardless of race, class, or gender.  You can be wealthy, poor, black, or white.  Everyone in the world has experienced loneliness at one point or another.  If you are feeling exceptionally lonely because you have just moved, are making a transition in your life, or are wanting to gain more friends, there are steps you can take to beat the blues.

7. Get a Job or Goal

Keeping busy is a great way to distract yourself from loneliness.  However, this shouldn’t be a long term fix or an end in itself.  If you focus on achieving a goal your mind well be directed towards that instead of being lonely.  Also, when you are doing anything whether it’s a presentation at work or trying to build the largest popsicle stick tower, you are likely to meet new friends.

6. Search for Events

Every community, no matter how small, will have plenty of social events going on.  Perhaps there is a jazz concert at the park or a carnival nearby?  You can go online and look for a group of people going together.  Check Facebook and Craigslist for upcoming events in your area.

5. Join a Religious Establishment

If you are particularly interested in religious exploration or development, you can go to a local church, synagogue, mosque, or any other place of worship to be with other people.  Religious establishments will have a thriving community of members who are always interested in getting to know new followers.  There will be plenty of events to socialize.

4. Get a Pet

Loneliness does not have to be cured by other people.  Getting a pet is a great way to express your affection.  Remember that pets are huge responsibilities, so make sure you are certain you are willing to commit many years to caring for one.

3. Spend Time with Family Members

Humans are social animals and family bonds are some of the strongest that exist.  Even if you haven’t spoken to a family member in a long time, try reaching out.  Connecting with someone in your family is one of the best ways to get over loneliness.

2. Be Active

Go to a museum, an art gallery, take up fishing, or jog down your street.  Whatever you do there are probably hundreds of others doing the same thing.  Just getting outside and seeing people can help you feel connected to the world.  When you are active, you put yourself in situations with other people around.  Try to strike up a conversation and you’d be surprised how many people you end up connecting with.

1. Understand Loneliness

Loneliness may feel bad, but it is a natural part of our emotions.  Even though you may hate the feeling, it has its benefits.  Just like pain cues us into avoiding dangerous situations, loneliness inspires us to seek connection with other individuals.  Loneliness opens up the potential for life-long friendships and love.  There would be little value in friendship if there were no anticipation or experiences of loneliness.

If you understand this feeling as an essential emotion that drives you towards positive experiences, than you don’t have to fear it.  Embrace loneliness as a motivating emotion, one that allows you to appreciate your current and future relationships.
