A kitchen hood over your stove is an excellent option to provide extra lighting and to suck steam and smoke out of your kitchen (depending on how good a cook you are). Installing a hood in your kitchen is actually quite easy, and you don’t need to hire an electrician. You will be able to buy a hood through any home improvement store, and you can find one that suits the style of your kitchen.
Determine first how you are going to vent the duct. Will it go through the wall or through the roof? Once you know where you are going to route the exhaust, you will be able to buy the ducting that you need.
Before you can install the hood, make sure that you mark the location of where you want the knockout for the vent to be. Hold the hood over the stove and mark the area with a pencil. Cut a hole at the location of the mark, either the cabinet or the wall, and make sure that it is large enough for the duct to go through. Cut until you reach the outside.
Install the duct, piece by piece, and tape them together with duct tape as you go. If your hood has a square duct piece and you are using round ducting, you can use an adapter that will join the two.
Next, you will connect your wires. Connect the white wire of the hood to the white wire of the wall. Connect the black wire of the hood to the black wire of the wall. You can ground the hood by wrapping the green wire around the screw on the exhaust hood. Use a cable clamp for the wires and tighten them.
Next, install the light and fan for the hood, and turn it on to make sure everything is working properly. Seal the vent pipe flange with roofing tar.
