Decorating Ideas to Help You Set Up an Efficient Home Office

List: Posted: 01/20/11

Whether you work from home or you simply need a space to handle the bills, a home office can make or break your business plan.  With so many people working from home these days, decorating a home office and making it comfortable to work in has become more important than ever.  What was once a desk and a chair shoved in a dark corner of the basement, has now become the hub of activities in the home.  Seen in this light, decorating your home office takes on a whole new importance.

The first thing to consider when decorating your home office is how often you'll be using the space.  Someone that works from home will need a larger, more comfortable space than someone that simply needs a desk to pay bills once a week.  This will help you decide where in your home your office will be.  Once you've selected the office's location, you can get started with its decor.

Now, it's time to think of the things you'll use regularly in your home office.  Decorating should be appealing to the eye, but also functional when it comes to an office.  Things like a computer, a printer, a fax machine, or a telephone might be your first purchases when setting up your space.  The size of your computer or laptop will help you determine how large your desk will be and what kinds of accessories you might need, such as a printer stand.  Get a couple of placemats to put your coffee mug on, and you're set.

A desk chair will be a key part of decorating your home office.  A comfortable chair is crucial to someone that works from home especially, since they will spend many hours in the chair.  Look at orthopedic back chairs if you're going to be spending more than 2-3 hours a day sitting there. The cost might seem outrageous in the short run, but if you're spending 8-hours a day sitting there, those aches and pains in your back caused by hunching over a cheap chair can quickly become a major headache.

Lighting is another often overlooked accessory.  Get a desk-lamp that sheds a warm glow to relax you, and make sure the overhead lights are the right brightness - too bright and you'll be squinting against the glare on your screen, too dim and you'll be hunting for the keys on your computer.

Warmth makes a big difference too. You'll want a room with a neutral temperature.  Too hot or too cold and you'll be constantly getting up to make hot drinks or to open the window to cool down. Some people like to purchase both a small desk fan and a small space heater to deal with both extremes.  Ionic desk fans can purify the air and create a comforting 'white noise' that can help you shut out outside distractions.  If you can't afford the electricity to keep the AC or heating on all day, invest in a blanket or make sure to set up your office in a room that has windows that open.

Decorating your home office can be a fun project that can help you become more productive. Just be sure to follow the tips outlined above to create an environment you enjoy being in - which will encourage you to work.
