Will You Learn to Play the Guitar Better Through Lessons or a DVD?

A guitar lesson from a professional guitarist is one of the best ways to learn how to play.  Many people are successful, on the other hand, learning to play the guitar by using DVD lessons.  Which one is better?  Both can be good choices, depending on your ability to learn and on your current skill level.

Learning from a professional does have its benefits.  Among them is the fact that you can work hand-in-hand with a professional.  This means that the professional can correct your mistakes instantly and tailor the lessons around your specific areas of need.  In addition, you can benefit from more intense training, or training that may be specific to the type of music you wish to learn, such as jazz guitar or rock guitar.

On the other hand, learning by DVD can be a good option because it is less expensive and gives you more flexibility.  A guitar lesson can happen in the middle of the night if you want, at your own pace.  If you are someone that is able to focus on learning on your own, this is the method to use.

However, this may cause you to pick up some bad habits which you will not know are bad because nobody is watching you.  For instance, both holding your guitar too high or too low can cause carpel tunnel syndrome ("Tennis Elbow") if uncorrected.  These may take you some time to 'unlearn' at a later date.

When it comes to how to take a guitar lesson, make it a personal decision.  For the lowest cost, the DVD option is best, but you'll be lacking the one-on-one touch of a professional trainer.  Working with a pro is more expensive, but it is also better for those serious about their music who want to get everything right from the start.
