What Made Michael Jackson the King of Pop?

List: Posted: 03/18/11

Whenever you hear the name Michael Jackson, there are likely many images that come to mind.  The moonwalking megastar who dazzled us with Thriller, the tragic victim involved in expensive court battles and horrifying allegations, and the musical genius whose death left the world simultaneously baffled and saddened.

One thing everyone knows, however, is that Michael Jackson was the King of Pop.  How did he get this title, and what made him so deserving of it?

From the start, Michael Jackson was never a normal person.  He shot to fame at the age of six as part of the group the Jackson 5.  He earned fans all over the world as he toured with the group, and his move towards solo work in the late 70s and early 80s proved to be even more popular.

Thriller is still the highest selling album in history, with over 100 million copies sold to date, and each of the 7 singles released from it broke the Top 10 in the charts, and set sales records in music stores all over the country.  When you look at the record books, you will find that Michael Jackson’s name appears multiple times.

Michael Jackson had number one hits in almost every country, and his career spanned more than four decades.  His videos were always innovative, but it was his childlike approach to humanity that helped people see something more in him.  He gave millions to countless charities, was among the first celebrities to spend time with children suffering from AIDS, and gave what he could to any in need.

What was also obvious, however, was that in many ways Michael Jackson was still a child himself, even as an adult.

While Jackson’s life may have been packed with speculation in recent years, his undeniable talent and charisma helped to earn him the title of the King of Pop, which is one that can never be taken away.
