Over 36 million Americans claim Irish descent, and on March 17th, Irish Americans (and people who enjoy Irish culture) celebrate "the luck of the Irish" by celebrating St. Patrick's Day at Irish pubs and homesteads across the nation. Decorating your house with green is a simple, easy (and most importantly, fun) way to show off your pride in your heritage on this important Irish holiday.
Live shamrock plants are easy to find in grocery stores and florist shops toward the end of February and the beginning of March, and they're both a great St. Patrick's Day decoration and a lovely houseplant to add a little green all year round. They work best in partial to full sunlight, and flower with tiny white blossoms once a year.
There are more seasonal St. Patrick's Day decorations beyond the usual green streamers and Irish flags. You can turn your bar into your own Irish bar with Guinness-branded pint glasses and shamrock coasters, and hang an Irish blessing by your door to greet guests as they come and go.
If you're planning a traditional St. Patrick's Day dinner, compliment your meal with a beautiful green tablescape. Get a centerpiece of white and green carnations, hydrangea, and other green and gold flowers. You can even get a small black pot and fill it with chocolate coins in gold foil, so that there's something for the leprechaun at the end of the rainbow.
It's always fun to decorate for holidays; don't limit your creativity to Halloween and Christmas. St. Patrick's Day can be a great excuse to "go green," and liven up your home.
