How to Use Craigslist.com

Craigslist is one of the most popular classifieds websites in the world.  According to founder Craig Newmark, Craigslist was built without any overarching vision at all, but is now the number one online classified website in the United States.

Craigslist is simply that – a classified website.  It's a lot like the classified section of your local newspaper, where people are able to post items for sale or items wanted.  You will also find job listings, service offerings, art and technology, pets for adoption, or even romantic connections such as dating services and escort agencies.  Everything is categorized into cities where participants can easily swap items or services, all within a few miles of each other.

One of the ways that Craigslist sets itself apart from other websites is that it is free to use.  The company has almost no monetization within the site itself, so don't expect anything fancy in the way of layout, page structure or graphics.  The initial page design has not changed at all since it was first built in 19956, using simple CSS and javascript coding.  However, the simple approach has been successful and Craigslist is enormously easy to navigate, even for first time users.

You'll also find that Craigslist staff will actively respond to your email queries.  Unlike many other classified sites, their customer service is top-notch.  This means that should you encounter a problem, you will quickly be able to have it resolved with the help of a staffer sending you a simple email.

Although Craigslist is very effective, it's important to remain cautious when responding to an ad.  There's a reason why the Lifetime channel made a film called, "The Craigslist Killer."  Never meet at night with a stranger without someone knowing your whereabouts.  Also, always meet in a public setting, and preferably have someone with you.
