There are many reasons that you might want to photograph your pet. For one thing, it's a great way to prepare for emergencies, should your pet be lost. For another, it can be a good way to make sure that your entire family is included in your family photo archives. Even if you're simply taking a picture of your animal for fun, your pet portrait can be a great one if you follow a few simple tips.
Capture Their Personality
When taking a photo of your pet, try to capture their personality. What is your pet's most typical pose? Does your dog like to lounge around on the sofa? Does your cat like sleeping in funny positions on your bed? Choose the location and photograph format based on your pet's personality, and the results will be much better.
You also need to think about the context of the photograph. Will your pet be comfortable where you want to take the photograph? What will the background of the photograph be? You want your pet to feel comfortable and natural as they patiently wait for you to take a picture. Try capturing them in their element. Remember that they don't have to be looking at the camera in order to capture their personality.
Choose the Shot
Even if you're not a professional photographer, you want to get close-up shots of your animal. You need to make sure that you are on your pet's level – plan a place where you will be able to get down to your pet's eye level, or raise your pet up by shooting them on a bed or counter surface.
Even Pets Need Great Lighting
Finally, make sure that you have the right lighting for the photograph. Outdoor shots can be taken in any kind of light, while indoor shots will need brighter lighting than just your flash.
Don't be afraid to use fun props from a photography store or clothing to add character to the photo shoot. This should be a fun experience that your pet enjoys, and will be happy to do in the future!
