How to Choose a New Hobby and Stick to it

List: Posted: 05/19/11

Most people love the thought of finding a hobby that they will be able to enjoy and have fun with for many years to come.  However, once they start their new hobby, they find that they quickly become bored with it and are depressed that they spent so much money just to try out the activity.  Whether you pick coin collecting or comic books, skiing or scuba diving, you need to make sure that you choose a hobby that you are going to like and that you'll be able to be committed to in the future.

The first thing that you will want to do is determine the basic type of hobby you want to have.  Consider your personal likes and dislikes.  For instance, do you want to have an indoor hobby, such as doing puzzles or collecting records, or do you prefer a physical hobby that involves being outdoors and getting wet or muddy, like biking? Think about all aspects of the hobby, from beginning to end. There's no point in choosing swimming as a hobby if you have a hygiene phobia, and if you're not fond of getting your hands dirty, then dog walking for your local animal shelter probably won't be a long-lasting hobby for you.

Read as much as you can about any hobby before you start.  You can find plenty of free information online that will help you to learn more about it.  You might also want to see if there are any clubs in your area that hold open meetings.  This is a great way to learn more about the hobby without spending a dime.  The more you learn, the easier it will be for you to decide if the hobby is for you.

Once you start your hobby, you want to start slowly so that you don’t overspend.  For instance, if you want to learn knitting, start with a simple pair of needles and one roll of yarn.  Don't go crazy and buy twelve books on knitting and half the yarn store!

If you find in a few months that you don’t like the hobby you initially chose, you can always find another.  You can often rent equipment or tools so you don't have to immediately invest.  By saving money and not overspending on equipment, you won’t feel so bad when you start seeking a new endeavor.
