Rum is probably the most cocktail-friendly liquor you can serve at parties.  Martinis are sophisticated, Bloody Marys are usually reserved for brunch or as the morning-after cocktail, but rum drinks are laid back, tropical and fun.  A perfect mix for summer.

 

Here are 7 classic rum party drinks perfect to serve at any soiree on the beach or in the backyard.  So hit your local liquor store or stock up on booze from the supermarket - you'll need it all!  Paper umbrellas are encouraged!

 

Long Island Iced Tea

 

This drink has a fantastic flavor, but has a lot of liquor, so don't go overboard with these.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 fluid ounce vodka

  • 1 fluid ounce dry gin

  • 1 fluid ounce triple sec (orange-flavored liqueur)

  • 1 fluid ounce rum

  • 1 fluid ounce tequila

  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle cola-flavored beverage

  • 1 wedge lemon

  • 1 wedge lime

Directions:

 

Pour vodka, gin, triple sec, rum, and tequila into a tall glass with ice.  Top with cola and garnish with lemon and lime wedges.

 

Mojito

 

A southern-inspired cocktail perfect for sipping on an old porch.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 teaspoon confectioners' sugar

  • 1/2 lime, juiced

  • 1 sprig fresh mint, crushed

  • 1/2 cup crushed ice

  • 2 fluid ounces white rum

  • 4 fluid ounces carbonated water

  • 1 sprig fresh mint, garnish

Directions:

 

In a highball glass, stir together the sugar and lime juice.  Mash the mint leaves and drop into the glass.  Fill glass with crushed ice, pour in the rum and carbonated water to fill.  Garnish with a sprig of mint.

 

Bahama Mama

 

This drink has tropical written all over it.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 fluid ounce rum

  • 1/2 fluid ounce coconut-flavored rum

  • 1/2 fluid ounce grenadine syrup

  • 1 fluid ounce orange juice

  • 1 fluid ounce pineapple juice

  • 1 cup crushed ice

Directions:

 

Blend rum, coconut rum, grenadine, orange juice, pineapple juice and ice in a blender until consistency is nice and slushy.

 

Strawberry Daiquiri

 

A classic Daiquiri recipe made with the most popular fruit.

 

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups ice

  • 1/2 cup white sugar

  • 4 ounces frozen strawberries

  • 1/8 cup lime juice

  • 1/2 cup lemon juice

  • 3/4 cup rum

  • 1/4 cup lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage

Directions:

 

Blend ice, sugar and strawberries in a blender until firmly chopped.  Pour in lime juice, lemon juice, rum and lemon-lime soda, and blend until smooth.

 

Pina Colada

 

If you like Pina Coladas... here is the traditional recipe.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk

  • 1 cup pineapple juice

  • 1/2 cup rum

  • 4 tablespoons white sugar

  • 8 cubes ice

  • pineapple slices to garnish

Directions:

 

Blend coconut milk, pineapple juice, rum, sugar and ice until smooth.  Garnish with a slice of pineapple.

 

Mai Tai

 

Another classic tropical fruit drink.

 

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups light rum

  • 1 cup dark rum

  • 1 cup 151 proof rum

  • 1 cup orange curacao (orange flavored liqueur)

  • 1 cup almond flavored syrup

  • 1 cup simple syrup

  • 10 limes, juiced

  • 1/2 gallon fresh orange juice

Directions:

 

In a large pitcher, combine the light rum, dark rum, 151 rum, orange liqueur, almond syrup, simple syrup and lime juice.  Stir, top off with orange juice and serve with ice.

 

Classic Hurricane

 

Like the Long Island Iced Tea, this cocktail can pack quite a punch!

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup ice cubes

  • 1 fluid ounce light rum

  • 1 fluid ounce dark rum

  • 1 fluid ounce coconut rum

  • 1 fluid ounce vodka

  • 1 fluid ounce gin

  • 1 fluid ounce Chambord (raspberry liqueur)

  • 1 fluid ounce triple sec liqueur

  • 3 fluid ounces orange juice

  • orange slices for garnish

  • maraschino cherry for garnish

Directions:

 

Fill a hurricane glass with ice, and add the light rum, dark rum, coconut rum, vodka, gin, raspberry liqueur, triple sec and orange juice.  Stir and garnish with orange slices and a cherry.
